Pony Says (DE)
Biography
Pony Says is a Stuttgart-based trio specializing in contemporary music and free improvisation, comprised of Lucas Gérin (electronic drums), Felix Nagl (electronic keyboards), and Thilo Ruck (electric guitar). The trio’s work moves between contemporary classical music, club aesthetics, and electronic subculture. Therefore, electronics are not an exotic addition to their sound, but rather an inherent part of it. For Pony Says, improvisation is on par with composition: In collaborations with
composers, the trio pursues a practice of “expanded interpretation,” contributing to the sound, form, and overall structure of the work. In doing so, Pony Says shifts the traditional relationship between composition and interpretation toward co-authorship. In addition to numerous premieres and guest performances, the trio develops its own formats, such as “Pony Says Club,” which places contemporary music in the context of techno clubs, and “Pony Says Pop-Up,” featuring guests from the international improvisation scene. Since 2021, Philipp Krebs has complemented the trio as artistic co-director.
