Biography

Lizard Ensemble, founded in 2020 by composer Katharina Roth, is a young, 13-member ensemble. Many of its members are graduates of the Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz and the group explicitly recognises itself as a Linz-based ensemble for contemporary music.

Lizard is a dynamic and innovative ensemble that aims to explore the frontiers of contemporary music while presenting the wide variety of styles and genres that exist in this field – always with the idea of constantly reconsidering the concept of actuality. Their willingness to collaborate and experiment makes them an exciting contribution to the contemporary music scene. One of the ensemble’s fundamental aims is to present the diversity of contemporary music and to engage in close creative dialogue with artists from a wide range of backgrounds, genders, disciplines and styles.

One of the Lizard Ensemble’s most important concerns is to collaborate with young composers in order to give their works a stage and make them accessible to a wider audience. In order to promote sustainability in the music scene, not only world premieres are performed, but works and programmes created for and with the ensemble are also repeated.

Lizard Ensemble’s performances are characterised by their innovative and experimental approach to music-making. The ensemble often incorporates unconventional instrumentation and extended techniques into its work to push the boundaries of how contemporary music can be performed.

Since its foundation, Lizard Ensemble has quickly established itself as a dynamic force in the contemporary music scene. Their first programmes “Linzer Augen“, “bubbles“, “small robots” and “Die lange Nacht der Uraufführungen” were characterised by well-conceived programming and the exploration of sonic horizons and were presented in Linz as well as in Graz and Vienna.
